Material Bank is currently benchmarking its global carbon footprint to establish a verified greenhouse gas emissions inventory. As part of our alignment with The Climate Pledge and our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we are developing a comprehensive climate transition roadmap.
We financially support verified carbon mitigation projects equivalent to our estimated inbound (in North America) and outbound shipping volumes, as well as our estimated corporate travel emissions. We source these third-party carbon credits and renewable energy credits through ACT Commodities.
This funding acts strictly as a voluntary financial climate contribution to external environmental projects. It is managed completely independently of our core SBTi operational reduction targets, which track and address our direct greenhouse gas footprint.
“By consolidating material samples and eliminating unnecessary shipments, Material Bank supports IA’s efforts to reduce waste and Scope 3 emissions tied to the design process. It’s a practical example of how industry synergies can advance climate action while supporting firms working toward their own sustainability and net‑zero commitments.”

Senior Director of Sustainability, Interior Architects
Material Bank is a signatory to The Climate Pledge. We have committed to establishing carbon reduction metrics across our business operations to target net-zero emissions by 2040.
Material Bank has committed to establishing company-wide near-term emission reduction targets validated through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to align our operations with a 1.5°C climate pathway.
8 million+ packages saved and counting, since our first shipment in 2019. The workflow magic of Material Bank, reducing inefficiency and waste, is the ability to search over thousands of materials and consolidate samples from multiple brands into one box, all while keeping the local sales rep in the loop of every sample shipped on their behalf.
The alternative, separate outreach for each sample request and multiple boxes arriving at various times for the same project, is no longer an option for a simplified workflow.
In 2021, Material Bank began purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to account for the electricity volumes consumed across our North American facilities and corporate offices. We extended this procurement practice to our European facilities in 2023. This tracking initiative is part of our broader internal evaluation to quantify and address our structural operational footprint, allowing us to implement transparent energy-sourcing strategies as updated frameworks become available.
Every sample ships with the planet in mind. We prioritize recycled corrugate, FSC-certified papers, and compostable cushioning, and we're working with suppliers across North America and Europe to increase recycled content and reduce plastic.
You may notice a thin plastic wrap on some shipments: it helps prevent the moisture and transit damage that would otherwise mean a ruined sample, a wasted shipment, and a second delivery, avoiding a larger footprint while we pilot fully recyclable and compostable alternatives. We're working toward fully sustainable packaging, so more of every box can be recycled or composted where locally accepted.
