Our products are fabricated using natural and sustainable materials, including wool felt, cork, leather, and wood · We donate post-production material offcuts to schools, museums, artists, and others who can give them a second life · We send wool and cork scraps to an industrial composting facility that creates compost for our local community

Our products use a modern graphic design language and play with shapes, forms, and repetition · All Submaterial products are designed with individual elements that are turned, reflected, repeated, scaled in size, or subtly altered, often in seemingly random patterns · This modularity allows for easy customization by size, shape, and color

Wool felt and cork both absorb sound, providing acoustic dampening to rooms in homes, offices, or hospitality spaces · The sound dampening of our wall panels can be boosted by fabricating the piece with an acoustic board substrate · Submaterial products marry form and function with sound dampening that is also aesthetically attractive

We deliberately create by hand, preserving time-honored techniques and valuing the expertise of the craftsperson · We don't eschew machinery entirely, but we use it when doing so supports and relieves the body of the makers · Working by hand allows the studio to be agile, creative, and responsive
