Working toward net-zero carbon by 2040 through The Climate Pledge, guided by SBTi-approved emissions targets. Since 2023, we've matched 100% of our outbound shipping emissions and balanced our energy use with renewable energy credits.
We source our carbon credits and renewable energy credits through ACT Commodities, matching 100% of our inbound and outbound shipping emissions, as well as 100% of our corporate travel emissions.
We are also a proud funding partner for new solar power projects with Clearloop, bringing clean energy directly to communities in Tennessee and Mississippi.
“By consolidating material samples and eliminating unnecessary shipments, Material Bank supports IA’s efforts to reduce waste and Scope 3 emissions tied to the design process. It’s a practical example of how industry synergies can advance climate action while supporting firms working toward their own sustainability and net‑zero commitments.”
Brett Gardner
Senior Director of Sustainability, Interior Architects
8 million+ packages saved and counting, since our first shipment in 2019. The workflow magic of Material Bank, reducing inefficiency and waste, is the ability to search over thousands of materials and consolidate samples from multiple brands into one box, all while keeping the local sales rep in the loop of every sample shipped on their behalf.
The alternative, separate outreach for each sample request and multiple boxes arriving at various times for the same project, is no longer an option for a simplified workflow.
Material Bank is proud to join companies worldwide that have signed The Climate Pledge to combat climate change. We signed in 2022 and are committed to net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040 — a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement.
Material Bank has set near-term, company-wide emission reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. We are committed to cutting Scope 1 and 2 emissions 38% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline, in line with a 1.5°C climate pathway.
In 2021, ahead of our commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, Material Bank began purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match the electricity used across our North American facilities and corporate offices. We extended this program to our EU facilities in 2023. This is one of several operational initiatives, alongside our shipping and travel offset investments, aimed at lowering our structural carbon footprint as we continue to explore new ways to reduce our overall environmental impact.
Every sample ships with the planet in mind. We prioritize recycled corrugate, FSC-certified papers, and compostable cushioning, and we're working with suppliers across North America and Europe to increase recycled content and reduce plastic.
You may notice a thin plastic wrap on some shipments: it helps prevent the moisture and transit damage that would otherwise mean a ruined sample, a wasted shipment, and a second delivery, avoiding a larger footprint while we pilot fully recyclable and compostable alternatives. We're working toward fully sustainable packaging, so more of every box can be recycled or composted where locally accepted.
